The Essential Volunteer, Village Voice 1996

Written in Innisfree’s 25th year (more than 20 years ago!), this description of the volunteer experience still holds true.

“Full-time volunteers, who serve as “houseparents,” are the special ingredient that sets Innisfree apart from any institution, whether public or private. A two-to-one ration of coworkers to volunteers is maintained in order to foster a sense of community “with”, not “for” adults with mental disabilities. This therapeutic model is at the heart of Innisfree’s philosophy. Volunteers receive a small monthly stipend. They do not come to Innisfree intending to only care for persons with mental disabilities; rather they enjoy a community to share their lives. Because of the high proportion of volunteers, coworkers receive a great deal of individual attention, and have a variety of role models both at home and at work. Volunteers come to Innisfree from all over the world for a minimum of one year, while some stay on to make their home for much longer. No matter how long they stay, volunteers are committed to creating a setting where each person is treated with dignity and respect. All community members are challenged and encouraged to grow, give and receive support, and have the opportunity to both teach and learn!”
